- LoBrutto, Vincent
- Vincent LoBrutto is the author of Stanley Kubrick: A Biography, published in 1997 by Donald I. Fine Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Books, New York. A member of the faculty of the film, video, and animation department of the School of Visual Arts in New York City, LoBrutto described his work as “neither an officially authorized nor officially unauthorized biography. ” LoBrutto sent STANLEY KUBRICK his credentials and a letter declaring his intentions to write the book, but got no answer. Although Kubrick neither cooperated nor interfered, the author’s research effort involved “four years of intensive research and interviews” with those who knew and worked with Stanley Kubrick. The book therefore is comprehensive, befitting an artist the author considered “the greatest living film director” at the time he wrote the book. LoBrutto’s earlier work included a book on Elia Kazan and interview collections, such as Selected Takes: Film Editors on Editing (Praeger, 1991) and Sound-On-Film: Interviews with Creators of Film Sound (Praeger, 1994). In the prologue to his Kubrick biography, titled “The Myth of the Reclusive Auteur,” LoBrutto announces his intent to find the man behind the myth that portrayed Kubrick as “an intense, cool, misanthropic cinematic genius who obsesses over every detail, a man who lives a hermetic existence, doesn’t travel, and is consumed with phobic neuroses. ”J.
